このスピーチが、アメリカ２０世紀の名スピーチ１００の第一位にランクされております。ランクされるまでもなく別格でありますね。

さて、昨日１月１７日。日本は普通の月曜日でしたが、アメリカは国民の休日でした。Martin Luther King, Jr. Day（キング牧師の誕生日）です。あの国、及び世界における人種平等、黒人解放運動は彼をおいて語ることはできない。

日本人の我々にとってみれば、中学生の頃の課題で、ひょっとしたら訳したことあったかもな、、、程度のスピーチ文章。

だが、オトナになって見返して見ると、あの法と契約からなる人工国家「STATES（『NATION』ではない。）」をまとめ上げるに十分な、パワーある魂の言葉たちにヤられてしまいます。こんなにも、自由と夢を美しく謳いあげたスピーチがあっただろうか。

Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends.

絶望の谷間でもがくことをやめよう。友よ、今日私は皆さんに言っておきたい。

And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

われわれは今日も明日も困難に直面するが、それでも私には夢がある。それは、アメリカン・ドリームに深く根ざした夢である。

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

私には夢がある。それは、いつの日か、この国が立ち上がり、「すべての人間は平等に作られているということは、自明の真実であると考える」というこの国の信条を、真の意味で実現させるという夢である。
